Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin confirmed that Russian forces will remain in Mali to support the government in its fight against armed groups.
This decision follows a series of violent attacks in the country in recent days, according to Reuters
Military support at the request of the government
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia’s presence in Mali is based
on an official request from the current government.
He also stressed that Moscow will continue its role in combating
what he called “extremism and terrorism” within the country.
He added that Russia considers its mission part of supporting stability.
This comes amid the security challenges facing the West African nation,
particularly with the activity of groups linked to extremist organizations.
Escalating security threats
The statements came after a surprise attack by a group linked to al-Qaeda.
This coincided with movements by separatist groups in the north of the country,
further deteriorating the security situation.
The Mali defense minister was also recently killed in a suicide bombing,
a development reflecting the escalating security risks.
Meanwhile, Russian Africa Legion forces were forced to withdraw
from the strategic city of Kidal following intense attacks by rebels.
Challenges to Russian influence
Reports indicate that Moscow was forced to deploy helicopters and strategic bombers to contain the attacks,
reflecting the scale of the challenges on the ground.
Analysts believe these developments could damage Russia’s image as a guarantor of security in Africa,
particularly given the increasing pressure on its strategic and economic interests in the region.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has emphasized its continued commitment to supporting the Malian government.
This comes at a time of heightened international competition for influence on the African continent,
amidst a complex and evolving security environment.
