Paris, France – During a visit to a hospital in southern France, French President Emmanuel Macron criticized what he called the “hardline approach” to relations with Algeria. He argued that calls for a complete break in relations were irrational and detrimental to the interests of both countries.
Direct criticism of the hardline rhetoric towards Algeria
France 24 quoted Macron as saying that there are elements within the French political scene calling for a severing of ties with Algeria. He described them as “crazy.” He emphasized that this approach does not reflect a realistic approach to managing the complex bilateral issues between the two countries.
Macron explained that relations between France and Algeria face multiple challenges, including issues of migration, security, and shared history. He also stressed the need to address these issues through dialogue rather than escalation or a break in relations. This comes amidst official efforts to revitalize economic and political ties between the two countries.
A chaotic system in need of radical reform
The French president also addressed the situation of doctors with degrees from outside the European Union. He described the current administrative system for integrating them into hospitals as “chaotic and in need of radical reform.” He also criticized the requirement for them to retake competitive examinations despite their existing work within the healthcare system.
Macron pointed out that these doctors contribute to addressing staffing shortages in French hospitals, particularly in rural areas. He called for simplifying the administrative procedures for their professional certification.
