Moscow, Russia – The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces thwarted a coup attempt in Mali.
It stated that it maintains its military presence and readiness to counter any potential attacks.
This comes amid escalating security tensions within the country.
Coup attempt foiled
Reuters quoted Russian state media as saying that forces affiliated
with the so-called “Africa Corps” successfully thwarted an attempted coup by armed men,
without providing further details about the nature of the operation or the identity of the perpetrators.
The ministry clarified that the “Africa Corps,” which succeeded the Wagner Group, continues its operations in Mali.
It added that the corps remains fully prepared to counter any new threats to security and stability.
Losses and field clashes
In a related development, Russian media reports indicated
that the forces suffered unspecified losses during their withdrawal from the town of Kidal.
This followed fierce clashes in the area earlier this week.
These developments come at a time of recurring security disturbances in Mali,
with ongoing confrontations between government forces and armed groups in several parts of the country.
