London, Britain – In a diplomatic move that strengthens the growing strategic partnership between Rabat and London, the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, reaffirmed her country’s firm and supportive position on the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Autonomy of the Sahara
During her official talks with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the occasion of his current visit to the British capital, Cooper affirmed that the autonomy plan presented by Morocco represents “the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis” for ending the conflict. She also stated that it brings lasting peace to the region.
Steadfastness of the diplomatic stance
This renewed assurance from the British Foreign Secretary reinforces the path laid out during the recent strategic dialogue between the two countries, held in Rabat in June 2025. Cooper explained that the United Kingdom will continue its active engagement at all bilateral, regional, and international levels to support the ongoing political process under the auspices of the United Nations. She also stressed the urgent need for all parties to engage constructively and urgently to reach a final settlement to this regional dispute that guarantees lasting stability.
Observers believe the timing of this British statement is particularly significant, coinciding as it does with major shifts in the positions of the great powers regarding Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, thus bolstering the international legitimacy of the Moroccan position.
The meeting also reflects the high level of security and political coordination between London and Rabat in confronting shared regional challenges. This demonstrates that the United Kingdom now views Morocco as an indispensable partner and a cornerstone of stability and security in the Mediterranean and North Africa.
