Tehran, Iran – In a new security development reflecting Tehran’s iron grip on the domestic front, the Iranian judiciary executed Mehdi Farid, a former official in one of the country’s most sensitive organizations, this morning after convicting him of “spying for Israel.”

Leakage of sensitive information via cyberspace

According to an official statement issued by the judiciary and published by the IRNA news agency, Farid held the position of “Director of the Passive Defense Committee,” a sovereign body responsible for protecting critical infrastructure from non-military attacks and threats.

The statement alleged that the accused established contact with the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency via cyberspace, exploiting his extensive powers to access and leak highly sensitive intelligence and military information to Israeli intelligence officers whom he quickly gained trust due to the nature of his position.

Human rights criticisms and an escalating pace of executions

This operation comes at a time when Iran is witnessing an unprecedented escalation in the pace of executions, sparking widespread concern among human rights organizations and civil society activists.

Observers believe that the Iranian regime has intensified its use of the death penalty since the outbreak of military confrontations with the United States and Israel, employing it as a tool to instill fear and prevent any internal security breaches or opposition movements that could threaten the cohesion of the domestic front.

Political messages and settling scores during protests

Human rights reports indicate that the current wave of executions is not limited to those accused of “espionage,” but also includes detainees linked to the January protests, reinforcing accusations that the judiciary is using the courts as a “political weapon” in wartime.

International organizations assert that these trials lack even the most basic standards of transparency, with verdicts being issued in closed sessions, a blatant violation of international human rights conventions.

Fortifying the home front during wartime

Amid the state of military alert, the judiciary’s message in executing a high-ranking official like Mehdi Farid appears to be one of “an iron fist” against anyone suspected of disloyalty to or contact with foreign powers, in an attempt to ensure the cohesion of sensitive state institutions in the face of mounting external pressure. As the conflict continues, activists anticipate more such sentences in the coming weeks, placing Iran’s human rights record under intense international scrutiny.
