Cairo, Egypt – Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi called for urgent international action to save Palestinian prisoners.
He warned of the dangers of what is known as the “death penalty law for prisoners.”
He described the law as a fully-fledged crime and a dangerous escalation
aimed at legitimizing their deliberate killing, according to the Emirates News Agency.
Al Yamahi stressed that this law will not legitimize the occupation’s practices.
Rather, it places the occupation in direct confrontation with international justice.
He emphasized the need for the international community to act to stop these violations.
Deteriorating humanitarian conditions
The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, in a statement marking Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, explained that thousands of prisoners in Israeli jails,
including children and women, are facing extremely dangerous humanitarian conditions.
He pointed out that they are subjected to grave violations, including daily repression, medical neglect, solitary confinement, and starvation.
He further explained that this constitutes a clear violation of international law. In particular, he mentioned the Geneva Conventions.
Al-Yamahi revealed that the Arab Parliament is taking urgent action
by addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union and regional and international parliaments.
Through this action, the Parliament is demanding the suspension of the Israeli Knesset’s membership.
He also called for broad international action to halt this legislation and prevent its implementation.
This is part of confronting what he described as a dangerous escalation against the prisoners.
Calls for international action and sanctions
The Speaker of the Arab Parliament called on the United Nations, the Security Council,
and international human rights bodies to take immediate action to provide international protection for Palestinian prisoners.
He stressed the need to impose deterrent sanctions.
He also urged holding those responsible for these violations accountable
before international courts.
He also emphasized that continued international
silence constitutes unacceptable complicity.
He affirmed that the issue of prisoners will remain a constant priority.
He further stressed that a just peace and stability cannot be achieved
without the complete release of all Palestinian prisoners.
