Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcomed the ceasefire announcement between Lebanon and Israel by US President Donald Trump. He considered it a fundamental Lebanese demand that Beirut had sought since the outbreak of the war.
Welcoming the truce and expressing solidarity with the victims
In an official statement, Salam said that this truce constitutes an important step towards ending the escalation. He also noted that it was the primary objective of Lebanese diplomatic efforts, particularly during recent meetings in Washington. He congratulated the Lebanese people on achieving this development.
The Lebanese Prime Minister expressed his solidarity with the victims of the war, including the dead, wounded, and displaced. He offered his condolences to their families and stressed the importance of working to overcome the effects of this difficult period.
He also expressed his hope that citizens would return to their homes and cities as soon as possible. This comes as the ceasefire takes effect.
Thanks for the international and regional efforts
Salam expressed his gratitude to the countries that contributed to reaching the truce, foremost among them the United States, France, and the European Union. This also included several Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.
He emphasized that these joint efforts played a pivotal role in pushing for de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities.
Trump had announced a temporary 10-day truce between Lebanon and Israel. This followed calls he made with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The truce was part of efforts to reduce tensions and pave the way for broader negotiations.
These developments come amid hopes that the truce will constitute a first step toward a comprehensive political settlement, potentially restoring stability to the region.
