New York, USA – UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate end to the war in the Middle East. He also warned of the continued escalation and its serious repercussions for regional and international security and stability.
Call to immediately halt the escalation
Guterres made a direct appeal to all parties involved. He called on the United States and Israel to immediately cease military operations. He also urged Iran to stop attacking neighboring countries. Additionally, he emphasized the need to respect international law and the UN Charter.
The Secretary-General warned that the effects of the war are spreading globally. This is especially apparent with the restrictions on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, food and energy prices are becoming higher. This is disproportionately impacting the poorest and most vulnerable countries.
Supporting diplomatic efforts
Guterres announced the dispatch of his personal envoy, Jean Arnault, to the region to support diplomatic efforts. He also stressed that conflicts do not end automatically. Furthermore, he explained that dialogue is the only way to prevent further devastation.
The Need to Seize the Opportunity for Peace
He affirmed that the current phase represents a significant opportunity to advance a peaceful solution. He called on all parties to seize this opportunity and prioritize dialogue. By doing so, they contribute to ending the conflict and achieving stability in the region.
