Rabat, Morocco – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) condemned the unfortunate events that took place during the Africa Cup of Nations final match between Morocco and Senegal.

Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations title for the second time in its history, after defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time.

The match was marred by controversy and chaos after the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco in stoppage time, just minutes after disallowing a goal for Senegal. This sparked widespread protests against the refereeing decisions.

Some Senegal players left the pitch in protest. However, team captain Sadio Mane intervened, urging his teammates to return and complete the match. The “Lions of Teranga” later returned and went on to win the championship title.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in an official statement: “CAF strongly condemns the unacceptable behavior exhibited by some players and officials during the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat on Sunday evening.”

The statement added: “We categorically reject any inappropriate behavior that occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or the match organizers.”

CAF concluded its statement by confirming that it is currently reviewing all video footage related to the events, in preparation for referring the case to the competent authorities to take appropriate action against anyone found to be involved.
