Washington, USA – US President Donald Trump threatened to file a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for defamation, demanding $1 billion in damages.
This is due to what he described as “deliberate manipulation” of one of his recent speech recordings.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted a source close to Trump’s legal team
as saying that the US president’s lawyers are currently considering taking
formal legal action against the BBC.
This came after they broadcast a video clip that they said had been edited
in a way that “distorted the original meaning”.
This is due to a speech Trump gave during a recent campaign rally.
Compensation estimated at one billion dollars
According to the same source, Trump’s team considers
what the BBC broadcast to be a “deliberate distortion of political speech.”
He had “damaged Trump’s public reputation” before his last election campaign.
He added that the potential lawsuit would include a demand
for huge financial compensation estimated at one billion dollars.
This is in addition to a formal request from the British authority
to issue a public apology and correct the published material.
A new attempt to tarnish Trump’s image
For its part, the BBC has not yet issued an official comment.
She merely stated that she “reviews the content of the report
and adheres to the strict editorial standards followed in the institution.”
Media reports indicate that the controversy erupted
after the channel broadcast edited footage of his speech on immigration and the economy.
His supporters considered this a new attempt to tarnish his image.
Spreading “misleading” news
This move comes as part of a series of confrontations between Trump and Western media outlets.
He had previously attacked major news networks such as CNN and The New York Times
Accusing her of spreading “misleading” news about his campaigns and speeches.
