Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Police in Tanzania have announced the lifting of the nighttime curfew imposed since last Wednesday in the economic capital, Dar es Salaam.

This comes after violent protests erupted over the results of the general elections,

which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries.

Security authorities said the decision came after a “significant improvement

in the security situation” and a gradual return of calm to the city.

She confirmed that security forces would continue their deployment in some sensitive areas.

This is to ensure stability and prevent any new riots.”

Massive protests

Dar es Salaam and several other Tanzanian cities have witnessed

widespread protests in recent days, led by opposition parties.

Which questioned the integrity of the electoral process,

accusing the government of rigging the results in favor of the ruling party.

The demonstrations were punctuated by clashes between protesters and police.

During the clashes, security forces used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

According to the BBC, at least five people were killed and dozens injured during the unrest.

Meanwhile, a number of opposition leaders and activists

were arrested on charges of “inciting violence and threatening public security.”

Respect freedom of expression

For their part, international human rights organizations called

on the Tanzanian authorities to respect freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.

And the release of political prisoners,

She warned that the security crackdown could exacerbate internal tensions

and negatively impact the country’s image abroad.

With the lifting of the curfew,

Life has begun to gradually return to normal in the capital,

as shops and cafes have reopened.

Meanwhile, public transportation has resumed its normal operations,

Amid hopes for a return to political and economic stability after days of tension.
