The government of Madagascar has officially announced its withdrawal from the presidency of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This sudden move raises questions about the reasons behind the decision and its implications for the regional bloc.

An official statement explained that the decision was made “for internal reasons related to a realignment of national priorities.” No further details were disclosed, and the group has yet to issue an official statement.

This withdrawal is a rare occurrence within the organization, which comprises 16 African countries. The organization is one of the most important mechanisms for economic and political cooperation on the continent.
