Since assuming office, the Kingdom of Morocco has been considered one of the United States’ “trusted allies and strategic partners” on the African continent.

In an exclusive interview with the Arabic and English versions of Hespress, Anderson praised the strength of the historical relations between Rabat and Washington.

The largest military exercise

Pointing out that Morocco was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of the United States,

He also noted the steady growth in the bilateral military partnership,

At the forefront of which are the “African Lion” maneuvers, which he described as “the largest military maneuvers taking place in Africa.”

Which has been organized for more than two decades with the participation of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces.

In response to the rumors about the possibility of moving the AFRICOM headquarters from Stuttgart, Germany, to Morocco or another African country,

The American general denied any current intention to do so.

A solid strategic partner

Explaining that the command conducts periodic evaluations of its operations and deployment,

But it is currently focusing on “strengthening operational partnerships with African allies,”

Stressing that “Morocco remains a solid strategic partner and has nothing to do with the leadership transfer plans.”

Anderson added that Morocco’s distinguished geographical location gives it an “exceptional strategic advantage.”

This makes the Kingdom a hub for developing operational and logistical cooperation.

Especially in the areas of training, information exchange, and organizing joint exercises.

Flexible partnership

In a related context, the AFRICOM commander spoke about the shift in the American approach,

This is in relation to the security situation in the African Sahel region, especially after the withdrawal of some Western forces,

As the new strategy moves towards “flexible partnership” instead of direct military concentration,

By supporting the local capacities of African partner countries.

In this context, Anderson described Morocco as a “model to be emulated.”

Praising his role in training forces from other African countries and his involvement in multilateral initiatives,

At the forefront of these exercises are the “African Lion” exercises, in which countries from three continents participate: Africa, Europe, and America.

Close cooperation between AFRICOM and Morocco

Regarding maritime security, the US military official stressed that the security of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean,

The two countries overlooking Morocco are strategic issues for the United States and its European allies.

He highlighted the close cooperation between AFRICOM and the Royal Moroccan Navy in developing coastal surveillance and rapid response skills.

This is in addition to participating in North Atlantic naval exercises.

General Anderson also stressed the importance of building an “integrated network of partners” to ensure collective maritime security,

Morocco plays a pivotal role

Pointing out that Morocco plays a pivotal role in building an “expanded Atlantic community” that extends beyond the northern shore, but also encompasses Africa and Latin America.

In conclusion, the US general stressed that the partnership with Morocco is based on “mutual respect and local capacity building.”

Describing the Kingdom as “a model of an African state with strong sovereignty, established institutions, and balanced openness,”

Which makes it a reliable partner in achieving regional and international security.
