Cape Town, South Africa – A recent scientific study has revealed archaeological evidence indicating that ancient humans may have used fire more than a million years ago within an archaeological site in South Africa, a discovery that redraws the timeline for the mastery of fire among early humans.

According to the researchers, remains of burnt materials, ash, and bones subjected to high temperatures were found within deep geological layers, suggesting that they resulted from repeated fire use inside a cave or ancient residential site, rather than random natural fires.

Mastering Fire as a Radical Evolutionary Shift

This discovery is considered among the important evidence supporting the hypothesis that human ancestors did not merely observe fire in nature but began to utilize it gradually for cooking, heating, and protection, marking a major turning point in human behavioral evolution.

Researchers noted that mastering fire represented a qualitative leap in the life of ancient humans, as it helped improve nutrition through cooking, provided protection against predators, and extended periods of nocturnal activity, which contributed to the development of early human societies.

South Africa as a Hub for Archaeological Research

The study clarified that South Africa is considered one of the most important archaeological regions in the world regarding the study of human origins, as it contains numerous sites providing consecutive evidence on the evolution of tools, social behaviors, and technology among human ancestors.

Experts believe that such discoveries contribute to re-understanding the chronology of fire use, as previous estimates pointed to much more recent periods before modern analyses revealed the possibility of this usage extending beyond a million years in some locations.

Future Prospects for Understanding Human Evolution

Scientific teams continue their work in analyzing the discovered samples using precise techniques, with the aim of determining the nature of the burnt materials and the conditions of their formation, and whether they resulted from direct human use or natural factors that overlapped with ancient human activity.

Researchers emphasize that such discoveries not only rewrite the history of early human technology but also open new horizons for understanding how humans transitioned from a simple primitive life to more complex stages of organization, living, and thinking.
