Cairo, Egypt – Composer Tamer Ali has filed a lawsuit against Rotana, demanding that the company stop broadcasting the song “More Than I Dream Of” performed by artist Asala, after the company granted permission to a Turkish singer named Ebru Gundes to use the melody with modifications, without consulting him or obtaining his approval.
Calls to remove the song from online platforms
He wrote on his official Facebook account that the lawsuit filed by Tamer Ali’s lawyer included an official request to stop the broadcast of the song on YouTube and various digital platforms, as well as to delete it from all electronic media, while obligating Rotana to pay financial compensation of two million pounds, in return for the material and moral damages he suffered.
Details of the crisis
Tamer Ali explained in the lawsuit that the song was written by the poet Mohamed Refaai, and that he was surprised that the company had granted permission to a Turkish singer to use the same melody with some modifications, considering that what happened represents a clear infringement of his artistic and literary rights.
He pointed out that the melody was used without his prior consent, which prompted him to take legal action to protect his intellectual property rights.
Urgent request to stop the circulation of the song
Tamer Ali also submitted an urgent request to the competent court to temporarily halt the circulation of the song until a final ruling is issued in the case, in a move that reflects a new escalation in the issue of intellectual property rights and melodies within the Arab music market.
