Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – African health authorities have warned that nearly 10 countries on the continent are at risk of an Ebola outbreak. There are concerns that the virus could spread across borders
due to population movements and weak health systems in some areas.
According to AFP, African health officials are closely monitoring the evolving epidemiological situation.
Consequently, surveillance and preparedness measures have been intensified in countries at risk of the virus spreading.
Strengthening emergency procedures
Health authorities confirmed that response teams are working to enhance health preparedness.
This is being done by strengthening early detection systems, contact tracing,
and providing personal protective equipment for medical personnel.
In addition, community awareness campaigns are being supported to reduce the spread of infection.
They noted that border movements and trade activity between African countries are
a major factor in increasing the likelihood of the virus spreading to new areas.
Concerns about weak health systems
Health authorities have expressed concern that limited medical resources
in some African countries could hinder the ability of health authorities to quickly contain outbreaks,
particularly in remote areas or those experiencing humanitarian and security crises.
They emphasized that regional and international cooperation is essential to supporting response efforts and is
also a crucial tool for preventing outbreaks from escalating into a widespread health crisis.
Calls for urgent international support
Health authorities have called on the international community and relevant organizations to provide technical
and financial support to threatened countries to strengthen their capacity to combat the virus.
They also stressed the need to ensure the availability of vaccines and essential medical supplies.
The Ebola virus is a highly dangerous disease. It causes severe hemorrhagic fever,
and mortality rates in some strains are very high.
Therefore, rapid response and containment are crucial factors in limiting its spread.
