Abu Dhabi, UAE – Researchers from New York University Abu Dhabi and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi have developed a new stent design. It can significantly improve the treatment of gastric leaks in some patients after bariatric surgery. Which may help speed up recovery and enable patients to return to their daily lives in a shorter time. Reducing the need for some additional therapeutic procedures that these cases may require.
In the study, published in the journal Advanced Healthcare Materials, the team introduced the Lily stent, which has a nature-inspired design. It consists of six flower-shaped parts, creating more efficient paths for fluid drainage.
Laboratory tests showed that the new design increased drainage flow by about 30 percent compared to the commercial cylindrical supports currently used.
The researchers found that the cross-sectional shape of the stent plays a more crucial role in how effectively fluids move, than factors such as the method of fixation or increasing the diameter of the tube.
The Lilly support is also highly flexible compared to devices made of polyethylene. Which may improve patient comfort and reduce tissue damage, while this study was carried out with the support of the Research Institute at New York University Abu Dhabi and the Al Watan Fund.
