Geneva, Switzerland – Slovenian Tadej Pugachar, a cyclist for the Emirates XRG team, won the title of the first stage of the 2026 Tour de Romandie. He was held in Switzerland to top the overall standings of the race, wearing the yellow shirt, after the end of the stage on Wednesday.
Pugachar’s victory came just 24 hours into the preliminary stage, where he dominated the race. Achieving his first victory in the road stages this season, and his first victory in the stage races during 2026. This raises his tally to five victories since the beginning of the season.
Outstanding group performance
The stage witnessed a distinguished collective performance from the Emirates team, which tightened its control over the rhythm of the race from the start. He succeeded in reducing the gap with the escape group early.
On the main climb of the stage, which extended for 8.9 km, his teammate Pavel Sivakov provided a strong start that paved the way for Pugachar’s attack about 39 km before the finish line in Martini.

Pugachar was able to form an advanced group that included Lenny Martinez, Florian Leibovitz, and Jürgen Nordhegen. The quartet maintained their lead until the last kilometers.
