Abu Dhabi, UAE – The UAE and the UK affirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership across various sectors. They also jointly condemned Iranian threats targeting regional security and freedom of international navigation. This came in a joint statement issued following a meeting between Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the historical relations between their countries. They also agreed to adopt a comprehensive framework to expand cooperation in the areas of foreign affairs, defense, trade, and investment. Furthermore, this cooperation encompasses artificial intelligence, energy transition, judicial cooperation, and combating illicit finance, thus strengthening a long-term partnership.
Condemnation of Iranian threats
The two ministers condemned the Iranian attacks targeting countries in the region. They affirmed that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. They also stressed their rejection of Tehran’s attempts to disrupt or impose restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, they emphasized the necessity of guaranteeing freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. The statement also noted support for international initiatives aimed at protecting energy security and global economic stability. This includes the initiative launched by Britain and France to enhance freedom of navigation within an international coalition.
Sudan and Ukraine
On the Sudanese issue, both sides called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and for ensuring unimpeded access for humanitarian aid. They also emphasized the necessity of a civilian-led political transition. They reiterated their support for peace efforts in Ukraine, commending the UAE’s role in mediating the prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine. They stressed the importance of continued cooperation to support recovery and stability. The two ministers expressed their aspiration to enhance cooperation in the coming period, with the aim of supporting regional and international security and stability and serving the common interests of both countries.
