Tivat, Montenegro – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar”, the world leader in clean energy, and the National Electricity Corporation of Montenegro “EBCG” announced. About the entry into force of the strategic partnership between them through the signing of agreements to develop two solar energy projects with a capacity of 150 megawatts. A study on developing a water-pumped energy storage station with a capacity exceeding 400 megawatts.

These agreements include developing the first projects within the framework of a partnership established between Masdar and ABCG in April 2026 with a 50% stake each. Which aims to develop a portfolio of renewable energy projects with a capacity of up to 2 GW in Montenegro. This will contribute to meeting the growing domestic demand for electricity, enhancing energy security, and supporting electricity exports to neighboring European markets in the future.

The agreements include the development of the 115 MW Shtidim solar photovoltaic project. And the “Cropac” solar photovoltaic project with a capacity of 35 megawatts.

Masre and ABCG also signed a framework agreement to explore opportunities for joint development of hydropower storage projects. With a capacity exceeding 400 megawatts.

Through its ability to store electrical energy during periods of overproduction and supply it to the grid when needed, water-pumped energy storage technology will allow increased reliance on renewable energy sources in Montenegro. In addition to its contribution to enhancing the flexibility and stability of the electricity network and its ability to adapt to various operational conditions.

Explore project development opportunities

The partnership between Masdar and ABCG focuses on exploring opportunities to develop utility-level clean energy projects in Montenegro. By relying on multiple technologies including solar photovoltaic energy, wind energy, hydroelectric energy, and water-pumped energy storage. Energy storage battery systems, along with hybrid solutions.

These projects aim to meet Montenegro’s growing domestic demand for electricity and enable it to export clean electricity to the Western Balkans and Southern Europe. Taking advantage of the existing marine electrical interconnection with Italy to transmit electricity on a larger scale in the European market.

Masdar has been active in Montenegro since 2018, through its investment in the 72 MW Crnovo wind power plant. Which is considered the largest station of its kind in operation in the country.

strategic market

Europe represents a key strategic market for Masdar. As part of its efforts to raise the total capacity of its global renewable energy project portfolio to 100 gigawatts by 2030.

Tierna Energy, which was acquired by Masdar in 2025, is developing the Amphilokhia project in Greece with a capacity of 680 megawatts. Which is one of the largest water-pumped energy storage projects in Europe. Providing technical expertise and specialized knowledge to develop such projects in Montenegro.

Expanding global activities

Masdar has a diverse global project portfolio with a production capacity exceeding 65 gigawatts. It is spread across many of the fastest growing renewable energy markets, and includes various renewable energy technologies. Including solar energy, onshore and offshore wind energy, energy storage battery systems, and hybrid solutions.

Masdar continues to expand its global activities through well-thought-out plans targeting important markets. This contributes to providing clean, reliable energy at a competitive cost, meeting the accelerating global demand for electricity.
