Seattle, USA – The United States national team officially secured its qualification for the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, after defeating its Australian counterpart by two goals to nil, in the match that brought them together as part of the second round of Group D.

The match, which saw a clear American dominance, took place at Lumine Field in Seattle, allowing the home team to continue their perfect start to the tournament and secure passage to the knockout stages before the final round of the group stage.

The first goal came early in the 11th minute, after Australian Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net, giving the United States an early advantage in the match.

Two minutes before the end of the first half, Alex Firman extended the US team’s lead by scoring the second goal in the 43rd minute, bringing his team a big step closer to securing the match points.

The US team maintained their lead during the second half, securing a well-deserved victory that raised their tally to 6 points at the top of Group D, guaranteeing qualification for the round of 32. Meanwhile, Australia’s tally remained at 3 points, postponing the determination of their chances until the final round.

The match witnessed an exceptional record for the American team, as they became the first team in World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in two consecutive matches during a single edition of the tournament.

The final minutes of the match also witnessed a rare incident, after the referee suffered a muscle injury that forced him to receive treatment on the field before the match could be completed until the final whistle.
