Cairo, Egypt – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed its full support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This comes after the withdrawal of a controversial proposal. CAF also praised the successful organization of the 2026 World Cup.
In an official statement, CAF explained that its Executive Committee had taken note of the apologies from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström regarding the procedural errors that occurred during the preparation of the proposal. The statement emphasized that these procedures were not intended to exclude the FIFA Council or national associations from the decision-making process.
The statement added that the proposal was withdrawn for a thorough review. The results will be presented to the FIFA Council at its next meeting. The federation also pledged to prevent any recurrence of procedural errors in the future.
For his part, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, stated that CAF is committed to applying the highest standards of governance, transparency, and legal procedures in all its operations. He also emphasized that these principles are a fundamental pillar of the federation’s management.
Motsepe noted that the continental federation will continue working in coordination with FIFA and national and continental federations to develop African football. This will be achieved through supporting national teams, clubs, players, and coaches, as well as enhancing financial independence and improving infrastructure and stadiums. It also encompasses various other areas across the continent.
He also noted the ongoing preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. He further confirmed progress in securing sponsorships and commercial partnerships, which will support the federation’s future plans.
CAF concluded its statement by affirming that the Executive Committee unanimously renewed its support for Gianni Infantino, commending his efforts in supporting African football. It also praised the successful organization of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and lauded the high technical and organizational standards of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations currently being held in Morocco.
