Madrid, Spain – King Felipe VI of Spain is preparing to attend the 2026 World Cup final to support his national team, which secured its place in the final after defeating France in the semi-finals.
Agence France-Presse, citing the Spanish Royal Palace, reported that King Felipe VI will attend the World Cup final, which will be held in the suburbs of New York City. He will be accompanied by Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia.
“All four will go,” the Royal Palace said in a statement carried by the agency, referring to the members of the royal family who will attend the final match to support the Spanish national team.
Spain qualified for the World Cup final for the second time in its history after defeating France 2-0 in their semi-final match on Tuesday evening.
King Felipe VI was keen to support the Spanish national team throughout their journey in the tournament, having previously attended their group stage match against Uruguay in Guadalajara, Mexico. He also telephoned the team after their victory over France to congratulate the players and coaching staff on reaching the final.
For his part, Luis de la Fuente, the coach of the Spanish national team, expressed his pride in the support of the Spanish monarch, saying: “It is a great source of pride for us that the Spanish king contacted us and showed this interest… He continues to support us”.
The Spain coach added: “We are responsible for this joy we are experiencing. The country has united behind one goal, so let’s enjoy this moment, but we still have one last step ahead of us, and it is the most important”.
