Tehran, Iran – The Iranian Football Federation has confirmed its stance against holding any events or promotional activities related to supporting homosexuality during the upcoming match against the Egyptian national team in the 2026 World Cup.
Egypt and Iran will meet in the third and final round of the group stage, in a match to be held in Seattle, USA. This match is generating significant interest both on and off the field.
The Iranian Football Federation, in comments reported by The Athletic, stated that it had officially informed FIFA of its position. It also emphasized its refusal to allow any such displays or activities during the match.
He added that relations between Egypt and Iran are based on shared cultural and religious ties. He also noted that the positions of the two federations reflect the values and beliefs prevalent among the people of both countries.
The Iranian Football Federation explained that it believes the opinions and concerns of participating teams must be taken into account when organizing events accompanying matches. It also confirmed that it has contacted FIFA through official channels to clarify its position on this matter.
This comes after the Egyptian Football Association previously announced its refusal to allow any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match against Iran. It emphasized that such events are incompatible with the prevailing cultural, religious, and social values in Arab and Islamic societies.
The match is expected to garner special attention, not only for its sporting importance in determining the fate of both teams in the group stage, but also because of the controversy surrounding some of the organizational aspects of the encounter.
