The African team put on a strong performance against one of the top South American teams, confirming that their results in the tournament are not a fluke, after they had previously forced a goalless draw against Spain in the opening round.
Cape Verde took the lead in the 21st minute through Kevin Pena, who gave his team the advantage for most of the first half, before Uruguay managed to come back in the final minutes of the half.
Maximiliano Araujo equalized for Uruguay in the 44th minute, and then Agustin Canobbio added a second goal in stoppage time, turning the score around for the Latin American team before heading to the dressing rooms.
Despite the deficit, Cape Verde did not lose their composure and continued their attacking efforts in the second half until Helio Varela succeeded in scoring the equalizer in the 61st minute, bringing the game back to square one and giving his team a great morale boost.
