New Jersey, USA – Kylian Mbappé, captain of the French national team, continued to make history with “Les Bleus.” This came after he achieved several record-breaking feats during the match against Senegal in his country’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup.
Mbappé led France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening Group I match on Tuesday night, scoring two goals, the last of which came in second-half stoppage time.
France’s third goal marked a historic moment for the French star, as it raised his international tally to 58 goals. This made him France’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the record he previously shared with Olivier Giroud.
Mbappé’s achievement didn’t stop there; he also became France’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup finals. This came after he raised his tally to 14 goals, surpassing the legendary Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the tournament.
The Real Madrid striker also surpassed Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the all-time World Cup scoring charts, reaching 14 goals compared to the Argentine captain’s 13, despite the latter having participated in more editions of the tournament.
Thanks to this achievement, Mbappé moved into third place on the list of all-time top scorers in World Cup history. He trails Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who holds the record with 16 goals, and Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário, who scored 15.
The 27-year-old Mbappé insists he is on track to break more records. This comes as he has a golden opportunity to further climb the list of all-time World Cup goalscorers.
