Cairo, Egypt – South African Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said he is confident that a team from the African continent will one day lift the World Cup trophy.

Motsepe added during the Best in Africa awards ceremony: “We will show the rest of the world that African football is among the best in the world.”

He continued: “We will go to the United States of America, and we know that one of the teams will make us proud.”

He continued: “We need one of the African teams. We reached the semi-finals, and this time in 2026 we will go further and achieve more.”

He added: “One day an African country will win the World Cup, and we will be world champions.”

Nine African teams qualified for the 2026 World Cup: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

In addition, the Democratic Republic of Congo qualified for the World Cup play-offs, after defeating Cameroon and Nigeria in the African play-offs.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to feature 48 teams for the first time in history. It will be held in three different countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
