Sydney, Australia – In an incident that triggered a security alert in the Australian city of Sydney, New South Wales police arrested two suspects in connection with armed threats targeting the Chabad synagogue in the upscale Double Bay neighborhood, coinciding with Saturday prayers on July 4, 2026.

Details of the incident

According to local security officials and eyewitnesses, two men approached the synagogue, claiming to be armed, and made direct threats to security guards stationed outside the building. The incident occurred at a sensitive time while worshippers were inside the religious center, prompting security personnel to take immediate measures to protect those present and ensure their safety.

Rapid security response

Upon receiving the report of the incident, a large-scale security response was launched around the synagogue. Units from the New South Wales Police Force, working closely with volunteer security personnel from the Sydney Jewish community, were able to track down the two suspects to a nearby location and arrest them without any further injuries or clashes.

Reassuring the community

Security sources praised the professionalism and swift response that prevented the situation from escalating into a full-blown disaster, confirming that the two suspects are currently in custody for questioning regarding the circumstances of their threats and the motives behind targeting the center. For its part, the police have increased patrols in areas surrounding places of worship in Sydney as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the communities.

This incident comes amid heightened security concerns at religious institutions in several global cities, placing the protection of places of worship at the forefront of the Australian police’s security priorities. The police have affirmed their absolute commitment to providing a safe environment for worshippers and ensuring that individuals are not intimidated while practicing their religious rites, vowing to pursue strict legal action against anyone who attempts to compromise the security and safety of the community.
