Athens, Greece – A large fire broke out this afternoon, Saturday, June 13, 2026, in a forest area near the Greek town of Mithana. The fire prompted authorities to declare a state of maximum alert to control the blaze before it spreads further. This comes amidst weather conditions that increase the risk of wildfires in forested areas.
Urgent action by fire crews
According to data released by the Hellenic Fire Service, the operations room received a report of a fire in a dense forest area in Methana. A comprehensive emergency plan was immediately activated.
Field reinforcements included the deployment of 23 firefighters equipped with the latest equipment. They were also supported by a specialized team from the 9th Emergency Brigade Infantry Unit (EMODE). In addition, six fire engines were deployed to secure fire lines and prevent the fire from reaching nearby residential areas.
Intensive air support
To bolster the efforts of ground crews facing difficulties accessing some rugged areas, the fire department quickly activated strategic air support. Four specialized firefighting aircraft and one helicopter were deployed to conduct water drop operations over active fire hotspots.
These measures are part of Greece’s proactive strategy for dealing with the fire season. In recent years, this season has faced increasing pressure due to climate change. Authorities rely on modern firefighting aircraft, including Canadair and DHC-515 models, for rapid response and to minimize environmental damage.
As of the time of this report, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to residential properties. Meanwhile, firefighters are continuing their intensive efforts to control and contain the blaze. Authorities have urged residents in nearby areas to exercise caution and follow safety instructions.
