Islamabad, Pakistan – In a tragic accident highlighting the daily dangers of Pakistan’s road network, at least 16 people were killed and seven others sustained injuries. The incident occurred on Monday when a passenger bus collided with another bus parked on the side of a highway in the Khoro Kotai area of Saidabad.
Details of the tragedy and rescue operations
According to data released by the 1122 rescue service, the accident occurred when a passenger bus was traveling towards the Swat region. It collided with another bus that had stopped on the side of the road due to a sudden mechanical failure.
Abbas Shah, the public relations officer for the rescue service, confirmed the casualty figures to “X”. He also noted that the accident prompted an immediate response from emergency teams.
Upon receiving the report, units from the highway patrol and the 1122 rescue teams rushed to the scene, supported by residents of neighboring areas who contributed to the initial relief efforts. The bodies of the victims and the injured were quickly transported to Mardan Medical Complex Hospital for treatment and documentation.
The identities of the victims and the suffering of travelers during the holiday
Although identifying the victims was difficult in the initial hours following the accident, medical and rescue sources reported that the majority of the victims were from the Dir and Bajaur districts.
These travelers were on their way home to spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday with their families. This family trip turned into a national tragedy, according to the Dawn Pakistan newspaper.
In this context, the Minister of Information and Public Relations for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Shafi Jan, expressed his deep sorrow over these tragic loss of life. He affirmed that the authorities are closely monitoring the health of the injured and providing them with the best possible medical care in government hospitals.
A recurring phenomenon on Pakistani roads
Traffic accidents are common and alarming in Pakistan, where highways and main roads often lack strict safety standards.
These accidents are frequently attributed to a combination of reckless driving, speeding, and driver fatigue. Poor vehicle maintenance and inadequate road infrastructure also contribute to the problem.
This horrific accident comes just weeks after another tragedy in the Charbagh area of Swat, where five people were killed and ten others injured when a bus carrying a wedding procession plunged into a ravine. This underscores once again the urgent need for stricter preventative and regulatory measures to curb this recurring series of road tragedies.
