London, England – In a remarkable success story captivating the European tech sector, 25-year-old James Dacombe from Yorkshire, England, is on the verge of joining the ranks of Britain’s billionaires.
His unconventional, self-made success story began with him dropping out of high school just two days after starting classes.
The value of Dacombe’s tech company, Olix, has skyrocketed to £2.5 billion (US$3.3 billion) following a successful new funding round of £232 million (US$312 million).
From self-taught programmer to prominent entrepreneur
With this achievement, the company’s value tripled in just six months, transforming it into one of the most prominent emerging success stories in the field of artificial intelligence across Europe.
According to available shareholder data, the self-made young entrepreneur owns more than a third of the company.
This raises his personal fortune to approximately £946 million (around $1.27 billion), bringing him rapidly closer to officially joining the ranks of billionaires.
Dacombe was born in 2000 in Harrogate, England. He began teaching himself programming from a very young age and, by the age of 13, had already developed numerous applications and websites.
At 18, he founded his first company, which focuses on developing a non-invasive technology for monitoring brain activity to improve the diagnosis of stroke and dementia patients. He drew inspiration from personal experiences with relatives.
This technology is currently undergoing advanced clinical trials at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and American medical centers, with a commercial launch expected next year.
Competition among giants in the artificial intelligence processor industry
In 2022, Dacombe received a significant boost, both in terms of prestige and financial rewards, when he was selected for the prestigious Thiel Fellowship program,
which supports young entrepreneurs without college degrees. He received a $100,000 grant to fully focus on his projects.
Two years later, he launched his current company, Olex (temporarily named Flux). It aims to compete with the giants of the artificial intelligence processor industry, most notably Nvidia.
This is being achieved by developing specialized “inference chips” that reduce production costs and avoid global component shortages.
The first version of the DX-1 processor is scheduled for completion this year, with mass production expected to begin by the end of 2027.
Government support and a promising future
The company received significant strategic support in the form of participation from Sovereign AI, the UK government’s AI investment arm, in its latest funding round.
In this context, Josephine Kant, the organization’s investment director, praised the company’s founder, saying he is “one of the most important founders of his generation, with a clear global vision and a deep connection to his country.”
