Washington, DC – US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s nominee for Army Chief of Staff, General Christopher Lanif, faces mounting opposition from Republican senators. Hegseth nominated Lanif for the position. However, objections from Iowa Republican Senator Joni Ernst and other Senate Republicans threaten his confirmation.

Hegseth’s efforts are met with Republican rejection

Higgseth is pushing hard for the nomination of General Christopher Laniff, who has been serving as acting Army Chief of Staff since he dismissed the previous Army Chief of Staff, retired General Randy George, last April. This is according to the Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials and sources familiar with the matter in Congress. However, without unanimous Republican support, Laniff’s nomination will not pass the Senate Armed Services Committee. The newspaper reported this as well.

The Trump administration was preparing to formally nominate Lanieff for the position last May. However, it was forced to postpone the nomination after the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, informed the administration that it lacked the necessary votes to secure confirmation. Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee. He is making an effort to secure tens of billions of dollars in funding for the ongoing war with Iran.

Why do Republicans reject General Christopher Lanive?

Lanif, who previously commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, faces sharp criticism from lawmakers and military experts. They point out that he was promoted to the rank of four-star general only six months ago. Military tradition dictates that candidates for Chief of Staff must hold this rank for at least 18 months before assuming the highest command position in the army.

For his part, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said that the department and Secretary Hegseth “support General Lanif’s leadership as acting Army Chief of Staff,” adding: “The department will continue to work with the White House and the Senate to nominate and confirm President Trump’s choice to lead the United States military.”

In contrast, a spokesperson for Senator Roger Wicker and a spokesperson for Lanif declined to comment. A spokesperson for Senator Ernest did not respond to the newspaper’s requests for comment. Officials explained that Ernest opposes his nomination in part because of his relatively short tenure as a four-star general.

Lane’s rise

Lanif’s reputation for discipline, coupled with a brief encounter with President Donald Trump, contributed to his rapid rise to a senior position within the Department of Defense last year. While commanding the U.S. Eighth Army in South Korea in January 2025, Lanif appeared via video link during the president’s inauguration. The stern-faced general addressed Trump, saying, “Welcome back, Mr. President,” adhering to a script that had been reviewed beforehand.

Trump appeared very impressed, turning to the audience and saying, “Doesn’t this guy look like he came straight out of a movie casting call?”

On the recommendation of retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, Trump selected Higseth Laniff to be his top military aide in 2025. He later appointed him Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, replacing his predecessor, retired General James Mingus.
