  • An important stage in the history of the region
  • A scientific study that includes translation and analysis of the document

London, UK – Researchers have announced the discovery of a rare Arabic document hidden inside the cover of an ancient historical manuscript.

Historians consider this discovery a significant event that could change our understanding of an important aspect of the history of the Crimean Khanate and its political and administrative relations some 500 years ago.

The discovery was made during the examination and restoration of a manuscript housed in a British library. The research team noticed old papers that had been used to reinforce the manuscript’s inner cover.

This was a common practice among bookbinders in past centuries. These papers were later found to contain an Arabic text dating back to the 16th century.

An important stage in the history of the region

The researchers explained that the document contains information related to the administration of the Crimean Khanate,

which was one of the most prominent political powers in the Black Sea region and nominally subject to the Ottoman Empire.

The document also sheds light on the methods of governance and administration, as well as the relationships between rulers and senior officials of that period.

The research team noted that the Arabic text contains the names of prominent figures.

Furthermore, they pointed out the presence of references to correspondence and administrative decisions.

Therefore, this provides new historical material that helps researchers reinterpret an important period in the region’s history.

This is because many documents related to the Crimean Khanate have been lost or damaged over the centuries.

The experts emphasized that the significance of the discovery lies not only in the document’s content

but also in its being new evidence of the spread of the Arabic language and its use in official and scholarly correspondence

and documents across large parts of the Islamic world at that time. The document also reflects the cultural interaction between different Islamic centers.

A scientific study that includes translation and analysis of the document

Researchers are currently working on digitizing the document using advanced techniques and deciphering the time-damaged text.

This work is a prelude to the publication of a comprehensive scholarly study that includes a translation and analysis of its content.

This will allow specialists to utilize it in the study of the history of the Crimean Khanate and its political relations with regional powers.

Historians believe that such discoveries confirm that many important historical documents remain hidden within the covers of ancient manuscripts or among the holdings of libraries and archives worldwide.

This offers researchers new opportunities to uncover details that have remained unknown for centuries.

It also allows for the rewriting of historical narratives based on rare original sources.
