Brussels, Belgium – The European Union has announced its approval of a package of measures aimed at simplifying the regulations governing artificial intelligence (AI), while also postponing the implementation of certain obligations under the European AI Act. This move is intended to give companies and developers more time to prepare for the new requirements, while maintaining safety and transparency standards.

The decision comes as part of a review of the law’s implementation mechanisms. It follows calls from technology companies and industry for a longer transition period to adapt, particularly regarding high-risk regulations and the technical and administrative requirements imposed by the European legislation.

European officials have emphasized that the amendments do not represent a departure from the law’s objectives. Rather, they aim to facilitate compliance and reduce bureaucratic burdens. They also aim to encourage innovation and enhance the competitiveness of European companies in the global AI market. All of this will be achieved without compromising user rights or data protection standards.

The postponement is expected to include certain obligations for AI developers and service providers. Provisions related to prohibited uses or those posing a high risk to individuals and communities will remain in effect. An updated timetable will be announced by EU institutions.

Observers believe the move reflects the European Union’s efforts to strike a balance between encouraging innovation in artificial intelligence technologies and establishing a legal framework to ensure their responsible use. This comes amid increasing competition with the United States and China in this vital field.

The European AI Act is the first comprehensive legislative framework of its kind globally to regulate the use of artificial intelligence. It aims to ensure the safe and reliable development of these technologies. It also supports the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights and promotes trust in modern digital applications.
