London, England – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing for one of his toughest weekly parliamentary question periods before his imminent resignation as Labour leader. He faces mounting pressure not only from the opposition but also from within his own party.

The session comes amid widespread anger within the team of Andy Burnham, Starmer’s expected successor, following the revelation of a £4.7 billion shortfall in the government’s defense investment plan.

Anger in Burnham camp

Sam Coates, deputy political editor at Sky News UK, reported that Burnham’s allies are “furious” with Starmer. He also pointed out that the plan, which promotes a £15 billion increase in defense spending, contains a funding gap of over £4.7 billion that has not been secured. This situation puts Burnham at a difficult start to his tenure, as he will be forced—according to observers—to make painful cuts or resort to tax increases to close the gap.

Tensions are running high within the government, with Coates criticizing the inconsistency in the positions of Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves. He also recalled their past criticisms of Conservative governments when they took similar steps. Coates explained that Burnham’s team “was unaware” of this loophole, which he considers a rare rift in the smooth transition the party had hoped for.

Beyond a mere “loophole”: The true extent of the deficit

The crisis extends far beyond the announced figure, with reports indicating that the size of the financial “black hole” could exceed £5 billion. This figure includes cuts to other capital projects that are still pending, or the reallocation of budgets to ministries such as Energy Security and Net Zero.

While the Treasury is trying to downplay the crisis, describing it as minor compared to the state budget of £1 trillion, the question remains: why hasn’t this problem been solved during the past ten months that the government has taken to prepare the plan?

Harsh criticism and government confusion

For his part, the Liberal Democrats’ defense spokesman described the government’s plan as “a complete mess.” These criticisms follow comments by Defense Readiness Minister Luke Pollard. Pollard admitted to Sky News that he only saw the details of the £15 billion plan yesterday, confirming that Downing Street only briefed Burnham on the financial details at the last minute.

This crisis puts Starmer on the defensive in his final days in office, raising questions about the economic and defense legacy he will leave to his successor. Furthermore, it adds further anticipation to today’s parliamentary questioning session.
