Highlights
  • Official condemnation and demands for a comprehensive investigation
  • Initial indicators and type of drones used
  • Concerns are mounting over the security of oil facilities.

Tripoli, Libya – The Tripoli oil depot was attacked by a drone in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026. The drone crashed near one of the vital storage tanks, but the incident resulted in no injuries, according to a statement issued by Brega Oil Marketing Company. The company said in its statement that its specialized teams and relevant authorities immediately secured the site and took all necessary precautionary measures. Brega also confirmed that fuel operations and distribution are proceeding normally and without interruption. The company reassured citizens that there was no direct impact on scheduled fuel deliveries to stations in the capital and surrounding areas.

Official condemnation and demands for a comprehensive investigation

In a related development, Brega Oil Company condemned the serious attack on a vital oil facility. It called for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the incident and demanded that those responsible be identified and held legally accountable to ensure the protection of vital infrastructure that forms the backbone of the national economy.

Initial indicators and type of drones used

According to initial reports, the drone used in the Tripoli attack appears to be an FPV (Flying Pilot Vehicle) model. This is the same type used in previous attacks targeting oil storage tanks and facilities in the city of Zawiya, western Libya, last August, which caused limited damage and fires. These reports also raise serious questions about a possible link between the recent incidents in terms of the methods and technologies used. Some preliminary information suggests the drone may be Ukrainian-made. However, this hypothesis has not yet been officially confirmed, and the origin of the aircraft or the party operating it cannot be definitively determined. We are still awaiting the completion of the ongoing technical and security investigations.

Concerns are mounting over the security of oil facilities.

This serious incident follows a series of repeated drone attacks targeting oil facilities in the western city of Zawiya. These attacks have targeted tanks belonging to the Zawiya refinery and fuel supply facilities. This latest attack brings the issue of security at Libyan oil installations back to the forefront, amid escalating warnings about the repercussions of any future attacks on vital infrastructure. Such attacks could pose serious risks to the safety of workers and the stability of fuel supplies across the country.
