Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday the appointment of the young General Mykhailo Drapatyi—formerly commander of the Joint Forces—as Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army. This move marks the most significant leadership shake-up within the country’s military hierarchy since the war with Russia entered its fifth year, aiming to inject new energy into the management of field operations. Meanwhile, Ukraine faces escalating security and military challenges across various fronts.

Biography and Combat Career of General Drabati

At 43, General Mykhailo Drapatyi is one of the youngest military commanders holding his rank. He is often described as representing a new generation of leaders whose careers were forged entirely during the ongoing war with Russia. Since the outbreak of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in 2014, Drapatyi’s name has been linked to the most difficult and fierce battlefields; he took part in the battles of Mariupol and the Izvaryne Cauldron, and also led operations in the south, in Kherson and Kharkiv.

Drabati was born on November 21, 1982, in the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi. He graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Troops in 2004 and began his service with the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade. In 2014, he commanded the brigade’s second battalion, with units stationed around Mariupol; on May 9 of that year, he entered the city in an armored vehicle to reinforce forces following an attempt by separatists to seize a police station. Continuing his academic and field career, he assumed command of the 58th Motorized Infantry Brigade in 2016 and led operations in the area of the Bakhmut highway. He later earned the title of “Best Graduate” from the Ivan Cherniakhovskyi National Defense University, receiving the “Queen’s Sword” from the British ambassador.

Key Field Achievements and Leadership Milestones

Drapati faced the full-scale Russian war in his capacity as Deputy Commander of the Joint Forces for Training. He then moved directly to the active front lines in southern Ukraine, where Russian forces had made significant advances. Drapati was a key commander in the operation to liberate the Kherson region—on the right bank of the Dnipro River—in the autumn of 2022, where he led the Kherson Tactical Operational Group.

He continued to rise through the ranks and assume leadership positions; in February 2024, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Military Training, subsequently heading the Special Operations Command in Luhansk. He was later promoted to the rank of Major General in October 2024. He received numerous prestigious awards, most notably the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the title of “Hero of the Ukrainian People.” On November 29, 2024, he was appointed Commander of the Ground Forces. He subsequently assumed command of the Joint Forces Group responsible for the Kharkiv front in October 2025.

The context of the military changes and their repercussions

This major strategic shift follows Zelenskyy’s dismissal last week of 35-year-old Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov—known for pioneering innovative technological and recruitment methods—who had clashed with other members of the Ukrainian defense establishment. According to media reports, Major General Drapatiy was one of 11 potential candidates for the role of army commander-in-chief; indeed, several sources indicated he was the frontrunner to secure the political leadership’s confidence. Ultimately, President Zelenskyy made the decision on July 21 to appoint Drapatiy to lead the military establishment. This move comes at what is arguably the toughest and most complex stage of the ongoing confrontation with Russian forces.
