Berlin, Germany – German security services have announced they are conducting extensive investigations into information and indications suggesting the possibility of planned attacks on German soil. This comes amid escalating regional tensions between the United States and Iran. The Handelsblatt newspaper, citing a spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry, reported that federal security agencies are closely monitoring developments in the Middle East. They are also examining reports of reconnaissance, espionage, and preparations that could precede attacks.
Preventive security alert
The security official confirmed that German agencies are in close contact with the federal states and international partners to continuously assess the threat level. However, the Interior Ministry clarified that the current escalation of the conflict has not yet led to an increase in the overall security threat level in the country. These security measures follow the publication by an Iranian newspaper of what it described as a “revenge list” that included the name of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This has triggered heightened alert in political and security circles.
Threat and vigilance scenarios
Security authorities, primarily the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), are conducting thorough investigations into threat indicators from entities believed to be under Iranian control or inspired by its ideology. The scenarios being examined by the security services include intelligence activities or proxy operations carried out through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) or its allied militias. This also includes the targeting of sensitive interests, with potential threats against Jewish institutions, Israeli interests, or critical infrastructure in Germany. The possibility of cyber sabotage is also under consideration.
Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has long classified Iran as a threat, particularly given documented cases of espionage and intimidation of exiled dissidents. Authorities are currently intensifying their vigilance and exchanging information with partner agencies. Furthermore, heightened security measures have been implemented for potential targets such as embassies and synagogues.
German authorities maintain that the ongoing investigations are a precautionary measure consistent with the known threat profile, emphasizing that while the situation is serious and requires vigilance, it does not currently indicate an “imminent and direct danger” to the general population. The nature and extent of the actual risks depend on the course of events in the Middle East conflict. Therefore, security services remain on high alert to ensure domestic stability.
