Niamey, Niger – The Nigerien Ministry of Defense officially announced the containment of a limited military mutiny that occurred in the vicinity of Military Base 101, adjacent to Diori Hamani International Airport in the capital, Niamey. In an official statement signed by Defense Minister General Salifou Mody, the ministry confirmed the complete recapture of all sensitive sites targeted by the mutineers. The ministry further stated that the attempt to destabilize the country had failed miserably thanks to the swift and coordinated action of the national defense and security forces.

Details of the events and the night of terror in the capital

A cautious calm prevailed throughout the capital Niamey on Saturday morning, after nearly two consecutive hours of heavy gunfire and violent explosions that shook the city during the late hours of the night of August 28 and 29, 2026. Moreover, the violent clashes were mainly concentrated near Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101. They also extended to the vicinity of the presidential complex and the headquarters of the Republican Guard, which bravely repelled attempts to breach the security cordon.

Details of the military intervention and movements of the Republican Guard

The Ministry of Defense explained that a group of soldiers took several of their colleagues hostage inside the military base before launching heavy gunfire towards several strategic and sensitive locations in the capital. In response, elite forces and the Republican Guard intervened immediately to contain the mutiny and prevent its spread. This allowed for a gradual restoration of control over the situation on the ground. Meanwhile, the state-run television channel, Tele Sahel, resumed regular broadcasting at 10:00 AM local time after a technical and security outage that lasted several hours due to the unrest.

Government calls for calm and heightened security vigilance

The Nigerien government has called on citizens in the capital, Niamey, to remain calm and continue their daily activities as normal, warning against the dangers of spreading rumors and unverified information on social media. Authorities also affirmed the continued mobilization and full readiness of the defense and security forces to defend the stability and territorial integrity of the nation. Furthermore, authorities are closely monitoring the security situation to ensure that no potential unrest erupts again.
