Pyongyang, North Korea – In a new escalation of North Korean political rhetoric toward the West, the North Korean Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang launched a scathing attack on NATO. The ministry accused NATO of pursuing “systematic” policies aimed at fueling security tensions in Europe. Furthermore, the ministry stated that NATO is attempting to export this instability to the Asia-Pacific region.
Accusations of “neo-Nazism” and Eastern expansion
A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in an official statement, asserted that NATO is attempting to maintain its “illegitimate justification” through reckless actions. The spokesperson further stated that the alliance’s continued eastward expansion only serves to push the security situation toward disaster.
The statement went even further, accusing the alliance of providing direct support to “neo-Nazi forces” and holding it fully responsible for the deteriorating security situation in Europe. The spokesperson explained that the alliance is pursuing a “policy of escapism” by shifting the consequences of its crises onto other countries. Furthermore, he stated that NATO is creating new hotspots in the Asia-Pacific region, warning that these provocations “should not be ignored under any circumstances.”
Targeting sovereignty and interfering in regional affairs
In the same vein, the spokesperson directed his anger at the NATO Secretary General, accusing him of adopting a “malicious approach” to the natural development of relations between sovereign states. This was a reference to the nature of the cooperation between Pyongyang and its international partners.
He asserted that the statements and actions of the alliance’s leadership clearly reveal its ulterior motives to bolster NATO’s military and political intervention in the Asia-Pacific region. North Korea vehemently rejects this, deeming it a violation of state sovereignty and regional stability.
This North Korean stance comes amid escalating international polarization, with Pyongyang viewing NATO expansion as a direct threat to the security system in which it participates. This is especially true given the increasing defense partnerships between NATO and Pacific Island nations.
This rhetoric reflects North Korea’s continued hostility toward Western alliances. It considers any rapprochement between NATO and Asian countries an attempt to “globalize conflict.” Furthermore, it sees such rapprochement as a means of encircling countries that oppose Western hegemony, foreshadowing further tension in international relations in the coming period.
