Ankara, Turkey – At a summit described as one of the most important NATO meetings in recent years, the world’s attention turned to the Turkish capital, Ankara. There, leaders of the alliance discussed the future of European security and plans to bolster military capabilities. This came amid escalating security threats and the ongoing war in Ukraine, along with growing concerns about a potential decline in the US commitment to European defense should President Donald Trump return to the White House.

The summit saw broad agreement among European countries on the need to accelerate rearmament programs and increase defense spending. Furthermore, participants focused on developing domestic military industries and reducing reliance on the United States for weapons, ammunition, and air defense systems, thereby enhancing Europe’s ability to address security challenges more independently.

Several leaders of member states affirmed that the next phase requires building a more effective European deterrent force, enhancing military readiness, and intensifying joint exercises. They also called for expanded cooperation in cybersecurity and missile defense, given the escalating tensions with Russia.

The summit also discussed continued military and financial support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of maintaining unity within the Alliance. Furthermore, they stressed the need to prevent internal political disagreements or potential changes in the US administration from impacting NATO’s security commitments.

Observers believe the outcomes of the Ankara summit carry clear political messages, most notably Europe’s readiness to assume greater responsibility for its own security. This comes at a time of growing uncertainty regarding the future of US policy toward the alliance, particularly in light of Trump’s previous statements demanding that European allies increase their defense contributions. He also hinted at reconsidering the level of US support for countries that do not meet military spending targets.

The summit’s results confirm that NATO is entering a new phase characterized by strengthening European defense capabilities while maintaining the alliance’s cohesion in the face of international changes and escalating security challenges. At the same time, the alliance seeks to ensure its continued role as the world’s largest military alliance.
