Moscow, Russia – Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Dmitry Medvedev warned that Moscow would respond forcefully to the attack on the turbine hall at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, after Russian authorities announced that the facility had been attacked by a Ukrainian drone.
Medvedev stressed that targeting the infrastructure of a nuclear power plant represents an extremely dangerous development. He noted that such operations could lead to catastrophic consequences that extend beyond direct military conflict, especially if nuclear facilities suffer significant damage that threatens radiation safety.
The Russian official explained that the attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant reflects what he described as Kyiv’s “escalatory approach.” He also affirmed that Russia will take appropriate measures to protect its strategic facilities and ensure the safety of its personnel. He added that any attempts to harm nuclear facilities will be met with a firm response commensurate with the threat.
The Zaporizhzhia plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, it has become one of the most sensitive and dangerous flashpoints in the conflict. This comes amid repeated warnings from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the potential risks of any military action in its vicinity.
This development comes at a time of escalating hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides using drones and long-range missiles. In recent months, they have intensified attacks on infrastructure, energy facilities, and military sites.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues to call for the protection of nuclear facilities from military operations. It has emphasized that any direct or indirect targeting of these sites could threaten nuclear security in the entire region and lead to widespread international repercussions.
The attack on the turbine hall raises renewed concerns about a potential widening of the confrontation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This comes amidst an exchange of accusations between Moscow and Kyiv regarding responsibility for attacks on vital facilities in conflict zones.
