Washington, DC – The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Donald Trump faces a real test of his stated desire to end the escalation or war with Iran, given the increasing political and military complexities in the region and the mounting domestic and international pressures on the US administration.

The newspaper indicated that any US move toward de-escalation or entering into negotiations with Tehran is hampered by delicate balances within the political and military establishment in Washington. Furthermore, there are the positions of US allies in the Middle East and Europe, who are watching developments with extreme caution.

According to the report, the Trump administration is seeking to avoid sliding into a full-blown confrontation in the region, but at the same time faces challenges related to how to respond to any potential escalation or tit-for-tat attacks that could rapidly alter the rules of engagement.

The newspaper added that the Iranian issue has become one of the most sensitive files in American foreign policy. This is especially true given the intertwining of military, economic, and diplomatic dimensions, making any decision regarding it fraught with careful calculations and far-reaching consequences.

Analysts believe that the coming period may present a true test of the American administration’s ability to balance political pressure with efforts to de-escalate tensions in a region that cannot withstand further escalation.
