Nicosia, Cyprus – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the European Union is prepared to gradually ease sanctions on Iran,
provided a comprehensive agreement is reached to end the current crisis and lead to a lasting truce.
Conditional relief of sanctions
Mertz, speaking at the European Union summit in Nicosia, explained that easing sanctions could be part of the negotiation process.
He also noted that there was no objection within the European bloc to this approach.
He emphasized that this step represents a European contribution to advancing settlement efforts.
He also expressed his hope that the negotiations would lead to a permanent ceasefire,
thereby strengthening stability in the region and reducing escalation.
European consensus on the approach
He noted that member states are adopting an approach that links easing sanctions to progress in the political process.
This ensures tangible results on the ground and encourages the parties involved to engage seriously in negotiations.
