New York, USA – UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate end to attacks targeting UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. He warned that the continuation of these attacks undermines international efforts to maintain stability in the region.
Guterres emphasized that UNIFIL plays a vital role in monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces in their mission. He stressed that the safety of mission personnel must remain a top priority, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
He noted that the recurring incidents targeting mission personnel reflect a rising tension on the ground. This could threaten to destabilize the fragile balance that has existed for years along the Blue Line, especially given the rapidly evolving regional situation.
In the same vein, the United Nations called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could escalate the situation. It also stressed the importance of respecting the freedom of movement of UNIFIL forces and enabling them to carry out their duties without hindrance.
The Secretary-General emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for any attacks targeting international forces. He asserted that impunity encourages the recurrence of such incidents and undermines the credibility of international efforts.
These calls come at a time of heightened tension in the region. This situation presents UNIFIL with additional challenges in fulfilling its mandate, amid fears that the situation could become even more complex.
Between the UN warnings and the realities on the ground, the stability of southern Lebanon remains contingent on the parties’ adherence to the ceasefire. This comes amidst international efforts to contain any potential escalation.
