Dubai, UAE – Dubai Customs announced the thwarting of an attempt to smuggle 223 endangered species through Dubai International Airport. This operation reflects the high level of preparedness
of the inspection teams and their ability to combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
Spotting a suspicious bag led to the discovery of the seizure
The operation came after an unclaimed bag aroused the suspicions of inspectors.
This prompted a thorough inspection, which resulted in the discovery of 129 lizards, 36 scorpions, 8 snakes, and 50 frogs.
The total number reached 223 animals, some of which are suspected of being subject to the CITES convention for endangered species.
Handing over the seized items and completing the environmental procedures
The seized animals were handed over to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment
to complete the necessary procedures and handle them in accordance with applicable environmental laws.
Dubai Customs also emphasized that protecting ports of entry extends beyond
preventing the entry of prohibited materials to include safeguarding biodiversity and natural resources.
Dubai strengthens its position as a global hub for port security
Dubai Customs confirmed that this seizure reflects the efficiency of its field teams
and their ability to counter complex and evolving smuggling methods.
This further reinforces Dubai’s role as a global model in port security, environmental protection, and economic development.
