Moscow, Russia – Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) accused the United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, of attempting to blackmail the United States. This is being done through widespread diplomatic threats concerning the future of the Ukraine agreement.
A report by the Russian intelligence service, cited by RIA Novosti, stated that British officials are prepared to threaten to strengthen trade and political ties between Europe and China if the US insists on including clauses in any Ukrainian agreement that do not serve European interests.
The “drift towards Beijing” tactic
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service reported that European countries, specifically London, Paris, and Berlin, have agreed on a tactic of signaling their readiness to Washington. This is intended to “begin drifting” toward Beijing as a form of political pressure.
Accusations of deception and asset theft
The Russian report claims that Britain is currently pursuing a double standard of disinformation:
Misleading Europe: Britain is supplying the European Union with “false information” claiming that US President Donald Trump is seeking a compromise with Russia “in pursuit of financial gain”.
London is formally calling on the European Commission to exploit “loopholes” in the EU’s Treaty on European Integrity. It is also citing “exceptional circumstances” to justify the theft of Russian assets frozen under sanctions.
These accusations come at a time when Britain was recently forced to publicly admit to secretly sending paratroopers to Ukraine.
NATO plans to deploy ground troops
In a related development, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the “coalition of the willing” had drawn up military plans to deploy NATO forces in Ukraine should a ceasefire be reached. The politician confirmed that these plans included “the deployment of ground troops.”
The Russian ambassador to London, Andrei Kelin, had previously warned that the UK’s efforts to halt hostilities were aimed at hardening Ukraine into a “steel hedgehog.” This would mean placing the Kyiv regime in a position where it would reject any compromise and enjoy unwavering support from NATO.
