Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump made a major diplomatic announcement. He declared via his social media platform, Truth Social, that he had reached significant understandings with China regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the future of arms control in the region. He described this move as a historic achievement that will change the face of global trade and regional security.
Securing the Strait of Hormuz forever
In a widely circulated tweet, Trump wrote: “China is very happy that I am opening the Strait of Hormuz forever. I am doing this for them and for the world too,” asserting that the era in which they threatened international shipping in this vital waterway is over for good.
Trump added, in his characteristically confident tone: “That time is over, and it will never happen again,” referring to the closures and military tensions the strait has witnessed in recent months as a result of blockades and naval confrontations.
Agreement with Beijing on Iranian weapons
Trump didn’t just talk about shipping; he also revealed a strategic aspect related to cutting off arms supplies to Tehran. He stated, “They (the Chinese) have agreed not to send weapons to Iran.”
This Chinese commitment, if confirmed, would represent a radical shift in Eastern alliances. Consequently, it would tighten the military noose around Tehran amidst its crippling economic crisis.
Awaited embrace in Beijing
Regarding his personal relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump painted a picture of optimism and political cordiality, saying, “Xi Jinping will give me a hug when I get there in a few weeks.” He further explained the nature of the current coordination between the two superpowers: “We are working together very smartly and very well.”
Messages of strength and peaceful solutions
Trump concluded his tweet with a rhetorical question that reinforces his approach of making deals rather than engaging in direct warfare. He wrote, “Isn’t this better than fighting?” However, he followed this question with a strongly worded warning to ensure deterrence, stating, “But remember, we are very good at fighting, if we have to.” These remarks outline a new phase of “grand bargain diplomacy” that Trump seeks to impose on the global stage. This comes amidst international anticipation of the results of his upcoming visit to China.
