Pyongyang, North Korea — North Korea issued a sharp rebuke against Japan over Tokyo’s record defense budget request, accusing its neighbor of exploiting regional tensions to expand military capabilities and prepare for an “aggressive war.”
The accusations come as Japan continues to reshape its security strategies amid growing regional anxieties over shifting military dynamics in East Asia.
Record Defense Budget and Escalating Rhetoric
North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) characterized Japan’s defense budget request of approximately 8.9 trillion yen ($56 billion) as a “dangerous surge in war spending.” Pyongyang asserted that these record allocations will enable Tokyo to build offensive capacity beyond traditional defensive needs.
Pyongyang warned that Japan’s military expansion could spark fresh security crises across the region, describing the trend as a destabilizing departure from post-WWII security arrangements.
Strategic Defense Shift and East Asian Dynamics
In recent years, Japan has taken steps to overhaul its defense posture by increasing military expenditures, deploying missile systems across remote islands, and easing restrictions on arms exports. North Korea views these actions as a direct reversal of Japan’s long-standing peace-oriented policies.
Conversely, Tokyo maintains that its defensive upgrades are essential for national security to counter growing military challenges posed by China and North Korea. The diplomatic exchange coincides with broader geopolitical movements, including US efforts to maintain dialogue channels with Pyongyang and statements from President Donald Trump regarding a potential meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
