Zawiya, Libya – The Zawiya Oil Refining Company announced that a drone collided with an untreated naphtha storage tank at its refinery early Saturday, creating two punctures and causing a limited fuel leak. Consequently, this security breach highlights the growing risks confronting key energy infrastructure across western Libya.

Furthermore, official statements confirmed that technical and engineering crews successfully contained the leak without reporting casualties or fires. As a result, operational readiness at the facility was maintained, while emergency protocols were deployed to secure the site and eliminate chemical hazards.

Security Risks and Strategic Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

On the other hand, the operating company expressed strong concern regarding military equipment deployed near the facility, renewing appeals to all armed factions to keep combat activities away from the complex. Specifically, this demand aims to protect facility personnel, ensure supply continuity, and insulate energy operations from ongoing armed conflict.

Additionally, the incident follows recent clashes between armed groups across Zawiya and Surman, raising fresh concerns over potential disruptions to national fuel distribution. Consequently, the strategic importance of the Zawiya complex makes any military proximity a direct threat to Libya’s broader economic and power grid stability.

Finally, the drone strike at the Zawiya refinery underscores critical vulnerabilities in Libya’s oil infrastructure. Ultimately, establishing effective security perimeters and insulating energy assets remain essential to preventing further operational disruptions.
